#HRBuzz: Our favorite blogs from July

With the dog days of summer upon us, summer vacation season is still in full swing. While some of us haven’t taken down our “out of office” messages since the Fourth of July, the HR industry thought leaders and bloggers have been hard at work producing great content on learning, leadership and talent management!sumtotal dog computer

In case you were snoozing on a beach somewhere, here are some of our favorites from July:

Informal learning requires a cultural change – Over on the Brandon Hall Group blog, Mollie Lombardi’s post, “Doing What We Know is Right,” featured the results of recent research showing a large gap between highly effective training methods and the percentage of an organization actively using those methods.

When it comes to learning, less is moreJean Martin discussed recent CEB research on learning trends, productivity and the steps you can take to create a culture of learning. Check out her post, featured on TLNT.

Should your co-workers know what you earn? – A NPR story featuring a company with full transparency around employee salaries sparked a debate in the online community. Our favorite take on the pros and cons comes from a recent LinkedIn blog post.

Syndicating riskTotalConnection 2014 keynote speaker, Peter Capelli, was featured on Human Resource Executive Online with his post on project mismanagement and the ability, or lack thereof, for individuals to make decisions without group or executive buy-in.

Taking employee engagement personally – Our guest blogger, Christa Degnan Manning, discussed four characteristics a company should focus on to improve the engagement of their employees in “Help Wanted: Smarter Talent Management.” Take a peek at the post and check out the upcoming live webinar with HCI to learn more!

Why you hate work – A recent New York Times article on employee engagement and productivity titled, “Why You Hate Work,” started widespread discussion in the blogging community. One of our favorite posts is from China Gorman on TLNT and focuses on the core of what employees need to stay productive and happy.

A focus on transformation at SHRM – If you missed the 2014 SHRM Annual Conference or are looking for a recap, you can find multiple posts about the event on the SHRM “We Know Next” blog. Jennifer Payne wrote a particularly nice overview of the entire event  and the underlying message of transformation and what it means for the future of HR.

What would you be willing to do for your dream job? Steve Boese poses that question in a blog focused on one of the most hated aspects of the work week…commuting. How long of a commute is too long and what factors need to be in place to make a 250 mile trip to the office worth it?

In business, time is a valuable resource - Over on Business Insider, a discussion was posted on “How One Weekly Meeting Can Lose a Company 300,000 Hours a Year.” The post touches on the far-reaching effects of one weekly executive meeting and offers tips for increasing revenue per employee by cutting out unproductive meetings that are wasting valuable time.
